I really would like to now ( especially because i just started this blog) if there is anybody from Canada that is following this blog and had same kind of injury.
Most of the blogs that i read online seem to be from the US and it really takes a lot longer for them to get into the boot after a surgery than for us here in Canada. Of course there is no chance that all Achilles tendon ruptures are the same and I'm sure they will not be treated the same way.
Please post your experiences with this injury and treatment you received or somebody you know.
I also wanted to know if i need physio after all this, because my surgeon doesn't think so ( or i misunderstood him ).
You know, one thing everybody is saying is " Don't push it ! This type of injury takes a long time to heal".
Well, what exactly is pushing it !?!?
I don't have any pain, i dumped pain killers 2 days after the surgery, i can move my toes with no problems and there is small foot movement, also without any pain!!! ( yeah , i take my boot sometimes during the day and try all this things :)) ) Wait, is that maybe "pushing it " everybody is talking about :)))) i hope not.
Yeah, i almost forgot
on Sep. 27 i have another appointment with my surgeon and i would really apreciate if i can get any feedback before that?
Thanks
Hi, I am Andy and I am from Vancouver BC. I had a full ATR on my right leg during the soccer game on May 2nd, 2010 (11:45am). I was running backwards waiting for the ball when i felt the pop, like somebody had hit me with a bat in my calf. I looked back behind me and there was nobody there. I am 33 and fit, and play competitively. I immediately went to emergency right after the tear, and I had surgery that night at 10pm. I was told I will be in a cast for 4 weeks, then in a walking boot for 6 weeks, total of 10 weeks. Surgery went well, and next day i was allowed to go home after I got some tutorials on how to use crutches. I went back 2 weeks later and the cast came off, and i was in another cast for 2 more weeks (4 weeks of cast total). First day I felt some pain and only used 2 pain killers, but after first day I did not use them anymore. Made me feel like crap. I jsut sat around during the first 4 weeks, watched TV, played video games, and had food served to me by my wife. :) was awesome. 4th week I went back to the hospital, cast came off and was told to wear the air cast for 6 weeks, week 5 non weight bearing. Starting week 6-10 I was allowed to slowly put weight on the bad leg, as comfortable as I feel. I was scared to take off the boot during the day but I did to wash the leg and let it breath. At night i was advised to wear it during sleep, which I did. I started physio 3 times a week during week #7. Physio worked on my good leg, hips, back, etc as I had not been doing anything for a long time now. Week 8 my physio took my boot off and started massaging my bad leg, gently massaged and loosened up the repaied achilles, and also some ultrasound. I was not told anything by the surgeon regarding physio until week 10 when i went in to get the boot taken off. Surgeon mentioned about physio and i said I already started it and have my own physio. Once the boot came off (week 10) I pushed the physio to 4 times a week. Lots of ultrasound, massages, some needle therapy on the repaired le specifically the calf muscle. Needle therapy is NOT acupuncture, needle therapy hits the muscle and the needle it taken out immediately. It releases the muscle. It felt great on my bad leg's calf.
ReplyDeleteMy physio continue to watch my progress every day, worked on my hips/both calves/thighs/back/ankles. She really knew what she was doing. Starting Week 10 i was allowed to go on a stationary bike on a gentle cycling (level 2 on the bike) for 20-25 minutes everyday. Slowly every week I upped the level on the bike and by week 16 (4 month mark) i was doing 45 minutes bike on level 10-13. I still was not allowed to run or do cycling on the road. I started doing heel raises at 4th month period, doing heel raises off the ground, also did a lot of balancing exercises and a ,lot of towel scrunches with my toes. At the 5th month mark, I started going on the jogging machine with a spee of 4mph for 1 mins, and 2 minutes of walking 2.7mph for 20 minutes. 4.5 month mark, i upped my running, was allowed to start doing SINGLE heel raises off of the stairs with the repaired leg. I also started going to the soccer field for runs on the field starting at 20 minutes and upped to 30-40 minutes. I also was allowed to start cutting on the field, doing certain ball drills. Once it came to november (6th months mark) i could do road cycling, any level of stationary biking, and any level of running. I started training with my outdoor soccer team beginning of December 2010 (7th month mark). My physio wanted me to not be scared but also be causious, do all my daily excercises and stretches. At this point in December I had lowered my physio to 3 times a week, and end of december i was done with physio. The first training session woth the team was horrible, i was so scared to charge in for the ball (I play forward), I was scared to take shots. The season went into a break for xmas, and I started my first real outdoor game on January 7th of 2011. The game felt great. I felt great. My fear was gone. And (knock on wood) i finished the winter season, started and finished the summer season, and just started the 2011/2012 winter season. One thing I strongly suggest is physio, the escercises you are given by your physio, and your own personal care. Make sure you find a good physio, make sure that if you want to seriously be back playing within 6-7 months to do all the exercises daily and be serious about recovery. I did everything my physio told me. UI have 2 friends who never went to physio after their ATR surgery, the never did anything, they had surgery 1.5 years ago and they are not going to play soccer anymore. You have to be dedicated to getting better and getting your body strong again, getting the repaired achilles strong again. Do your heel raises to keep your good and your repaired achilles strong. I always worry about my other achilles tearing, but i do my heel raises 2-3 times a week, and one HUGE thing for me is massaging my calves and achilles area daily. Anytime I can find 10-15 minutes, I massage them to get the blood flow going. THIS IS HUGE in road for recovery. That blood flow helps your achilles to get stronger. Before every game or practice, I arrive 30 minutes prior to start and I thoroughly massage my calves and achilles, both legs. I hope this helps you and stay strong, you will get there, trust me. Just be dedicated and do everything you can to get back. If you have any other questions msg me on facebook.

Hey Andy , thanks for your response. That's amazing, to be back to the soccer field so quick. I hope to be back before next outdoor season starts. But at this point i'm not sure if i will go back at all.
